EDUCATION

ODEKA Foundation was established with the purpose of providing safe haven where Haitian children participate in a comprehensive program of academic tutoring that promotes the physical, education and life skills necessary to prepare and empower them to leadership in their communities and success in their personal lives. Haiti has earned a reputation as a tough town with many problems. We see in the media many examples of the immense problems facing Haiti. One of the problems is access to education. Only 50% of the children go past sixth grade. We have too much crime, truancy, substance abuse, teen pregnancy and academic failure. But all this is changing and ODEKA is playing a big role in the transformation.

Free public education is something most of us take for granted. In Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere, private schools are the only option for education and very few families can afford even the most modest tuition. We have decided to build a community school to help these children improve their living conditions, better integrate into society and at the same time earn a living. The project will have to meet many social, constructive and economic challenges while proposing solutions that improve educational conditions. The school will include seven classrooms, one study room, a cafeteria and court yard area and will benefit more than 140 children in the community.

ODEKA have served Haitian children and the community pioneering new and innovative solutions to end destructive cycles of gangster, street activities, poverty and lack of opportunity in the community. We provide integrated services for Haiti that ensure their long-term academic, professional, social and emotional success. It serves over 500 youth at risk. Our comprehensive, community responsive, culturally relevant program builds skills in three key areas; education, workforce development and culture. The project provides them with multiple, closely aligned leads to successful futures as adults. It promotes long-term engagement from age 6-15 and positive relationships with adults, providing youth with vast network of support they need to grow confident, competent, resilient and self-sustaining.

ODEKA COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL

PROJECT OBJECTIVE

After survey was conducted in the Grand Goâve area, we note that many children aged 6 to 15 are still present in their villages, come and go and do not carry out any concrete activity to improve their living conditions , lack of the economic means and also for lack of community school available to them. However, the majority of these children are girls, showing their  desire to complete their primary and secondary studies. As a consequence, they were exposed to juvenile delinquency, early pregnancy, and other activities such as child labor. To reduce the impact of the danger to which they are exposed, ODEKA has decided to build a community school to help these children improve their living conditions, better integrate into society and at the same time earn a living. The project will have to meet many social, constructive and economic challenges while proposing solutions that improve educational conditions. The school will include seven classrooms, one study room, a cafeteria and court yard area and will benefit more than 140 children in the community.
